The artist Valenti describes herself as an Animalière – an artist who specialises in the realistic portrayal of animals. This is a venerable genre which includes artists from the 17th century Flemish artist Frans Snyder to the 19th century French artist Rosa Bonheur. Her perceptive and subversive use of the portrait tradition of those times she says – ‘blends society’s historical legacy with current environmental concerns’.
An animal artist par excellence Valenti studied in the National College of Art and took various masterclasses at the Royal Hibernian Academy, both here in Dublin. Her research of painting materials and techniques of the ‘Old Masters’ is an integral part of her practice as is evidenced in these wonderful paintings from her series ‘Tales of Animalia’.
